The Driver og The Mechanic er to bil-freaker som kjører en 1955 Chevy gjennom det sørvestlige USA på jakt etter andre biler å kjøre mot. De er helt betatt av bilen og samtaler kun når de må. På en bensinstasjon treffer de GTO, en middelaldrende skrønemaker. De avtaler å kjøre om kapp til Washington, D.C., hvor vinneren får taperens bil i premie. (Cover)
